Two new animals have been added to the display rotunda at the Prairie Heritage Center!
An eagle now soars above the prairie diorama. The bird is in the third year plumage which shows neither a completely white head nor tail. (The eagle gains its mature color pattern at four years of age.) Its 8’ wingspan is impressive from below. Equally imposing are the talons which are extended with the potential of plucking the jackrabbit away from the pursing coyote. A mountain lion has also recently made the Prairie Heritage Center its home. Jim Hunt of Postville, Iowa has donated the mounted animal to the center. Historically mountain lions roamed the wooded draws throughout the state. The landscape around the center would have been ideal habitat for this large carnivore. If you haven’t been out to see the center recently (or even if you have!), stop in and check out these new displays. Things are always changing at the Prairie Heritage Center! |
