Bison Have Arrived at the Prairie Heritage Center!
The long awaited bison release occurred at the Prairie Heritage Center on Thursday, May 25!  Over 225 people came out to be a part of the experience.  A calf, two cows and finally the bull rumbled out of the trailer to the delight of the crowd.

The bison are owned by Dave & Teresa Stoll of Primghar.  The Conservation Board is excited about the partnership opportunity with the Stolls that allows the bison to graze on the prairie and gives visitors a first-hand look at one of the animals that dominated the tallgrass prairie prior to white settlement.

The male bison is 12 ½ years old and weighs approximately 1,800 pounds.  The females are slightly smaller.  The calf was born on May 11 and still has some reddish color in his coat.   Although we anticipated a second calf, it looks as though the second female will not have one this year.  These animals are very strong, and the female is protective of her young calf.  Please respect the fence boundaries when viewing the animals.

We encourage you to stop by often throughout the summer to see these magnificent creatures.  After viewing the bison, be sure to stop in the center to see the newest exhibits on display.

The center's hours are:

Wednesday - Friday from 9:00 - 4:00

Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00
